AI will bland your brand – you need a North Star before the algorithm flattens it

September 1, 2026

Why the North Star matters for tomorrow's brands

Even in complete pitch black – when you’re completely lost – you’ll always find your way with your North Star.

Without any other support or guidance, you still find your way around. That’s what those values deliver to you. That’s what your mission delivers for you. And that’s what your positioning delivers for you.

It’s a filter for creative and marketing decisions to ensure that we are thinking about our brand in the right way and always bringing it back to its core.

We’ve got a smaller window of time to grab people’s attention

Shrinking attention spans and multi-channel content means having a North Star is increasingly important. Ultimately, we have less and less time to get our brands under people’s noses.

Your core values are easily lost in the temptation to follow the latest TikTok trend. Meanwhile, short-form content creates even more of a need to be confident and compelling with your message.

We’ve got to communicate real value

With the rise in the cost of living, it’s imperative for brands to communicate their value and potentially higher prices effectively.

If we’re asking people to spend more money on our premium products, what do they get in return? What are we giving the consumer that is better than a cheaper, store brand?

Creative teams are battling more pressure. Combine the above and it’s no wonder there’s mounting pressure on creative teams. Luckily, the North Star can help you nail your message with pinpoint accuracy.

How do we perfect the North Star?

As a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to brand building, I believe there are four key areas that I would expect a well-established brand to have in place:

Purpose

Communicate your purpose. Help me understand why your company exists, what it supports and what makes it tick.

Mission

Say what you’re passionate about – be clear on the aspirational, long-term goal for your brand. Then, your goal is to get to a point where consumers rally behind it with you.

Values

Choose the values you will employ to ensure you achieve your purpose and mission. Think of them as a roadmap of what you’re trying to accomplish.

Positioning and promise

The fourth part is all about articulating the above. Make it crystal clear to your customers your purpose, vision and mission and show you’re committed to delivering it.

A final thought about your North Star

Rob Roach, Managing Director at Grit & Pearl, uses a simple but memorable analogy to explain what a North Star really means for a brand.

“When I go shopping for clothes and I go to try something on, not only am I checking for the fit and the practical ways this clothing will work for me, but also the bigger picture”:
Does it feel like me?
Does it fit my purpose?
Does it represent me?
Does it communicate the values I have?”

In a way, the physical fit is almost secondary. It’s about how it makes me feel and how it represents who I am.

And this is exactly true of your North Star. Every piece of content. Every campaign. Every creative decision. Every new trend you consider following should pass the same test:

Does this feel like us?

Because in a world where AI can produce something in seconds, the value isn’t simply in producing more. It’s in knowing what is worth producing in the first place.

Your North Star gives you that clarity. It keeps you anchored to what makes your brand distinctive, while giving your teams the confidence to evolve without losing who you are.

The brands that will stand out tomorrow won’t necessarily be the loudest. They’ll be the ones that know exactly what they stand for.
